Turns out long loads and tight bends don’t mix. Who’da thunk?

Now some poor bastard’s got the jo b of finding a mobile crane that can lift a 200ft wind turbine blade, and getti ng it from wherever it is to somewhere that even by NZ standards is not exactly urban . Guess that road’s staying closed for a while...

I bet he dropped the trailer wheels off the inside edge, and over she went.

The blade could probably never be certified for use now. Why pick it up? Chop it up, drag it off the road, load it into dump trucks and try again.

Someone needed many more hours on Euro Truck Simulator 2...

But really. Someone’s in shit for planning that route and the trucker’s in shit for attempting it.

Quite possible it was the best route. I agree with shop-teacher that the problem was letting the trailer track over the edge of the road.

Do these trucks have steerable rear wheels? Seems like it would be highly desirable.

All it needs is a Tesla attempting to use it as a launch ramp.

I have seen videos of these being hauled with steerable rear wheels. I obviously have no idea if this one was on steerable rear wheels, but that is definitely a thing.

That certainly looks like the case. Surprising they didn’t have someone on foot watc hing the clearance - he won’t have been goi ng faster than a couple of mph round an obvious hazard like that.

Given the cost - and more importantly, time delay - involved in getting a new one from G ermany or wherever, it’ll be worthwhile going over every inch of the thi ng with an X ray machi ne before making that call, I expect. It’s fibreglass, so it’ll be repairable unless it’s really badly stressed: large scale composite structures i s one area where NZ has some world class expertise, thanks to the yacht racing industry.

SH45 is by s ome distance the closest thing there is to a major road in that area: as I said, it’s seriously rural country. That route was almost certainly their only viable option . Presumably there will have been so me heavy duty planning befofe the event - it’s not the sort of thing you just do a “hold my beer” on. Looks to me like a simple misjudgment on the trucker’s part. Or possibly a bit of road collapsing under the trailer’s inside wheels: it’s been wet here the last few days, somethi ng invisible may have washed out.

As long as the VIN tag survived , everything’ s fixable.

Yeah. That was a huge screw up.

That's very possible. There would have been a lot of weight on that inside edge.

Sure looks like a “hold my beer” moment considering this is the first blade they were transporting. Was their no route recce? “Square Left, Don’t Cut”?

Perhaps you’re right and it is the best route. However from what I’m seeing that trailer is not acceptable to make that turn radius, at that length you’d need rear steer to make that corner safely. Based on where the front of the cab is laying it was transversing that turn off the road as far as to not hit the reflectors to keep the trailer radius as wide as possible and it wasn’t enough. So even if it was the best route the equipment was still not acceptable for it. As far as I’m concerned they were doomed at this corner in this state from the get-go.

Also the rear spotter should have been been smarter than to try and push through that turn when the tires left the road. I know it’s dark, early morning, and watching a truck meander the roads for hours  is boring AF but you get paid big bucks to prevent this from happening. Especially considering this was essentially a trial of the route.

Aah, that must have been thei r problem - codriver got out of synch with his pace notes. Sho uld have hired a Finn.

Actually I’m wondering if they had the inside road edge collapse on them. Seems like too amateur a mistake otherwise. We’ve had a lot of rain the last few days, maybe something washed out. Get an axle dug in with the tractor pulling at that sort of angle and you’d drag t he trailer sideways off the road before you knew what had happened.

There’s not really any image that gives a good look, but at about 0:08 in the video in that link there’ s a dark patch on the road edge behind the trailer wheels which could be a hole . Though it could also jus t be mud dug up as it ploughed in, of course.

It going to be a hard calculus for someone, for sure.

I wouldn’t want to be the engineer making that call.

Are you suggesting that a giant thing that's literally designed to turn wind into motion, might be subject to crosswinds? I don't know ... That seems unlikely ;)

i saw a documentary about these blades being moved and they had steering control over the trailer wheels to allow these things to even exist and they had to stop and fix a malfunction on the hydraulic system that is used, this may be a possible reason for this to happen
